From my recap of the event:Ī woman falls in love with a Frenchman, except circumstances force them apart, so she settles for an Englishman (“always a poor second,” he quipped). When I met Rutherfurd at a Random House Canada blogger event, he gave us a brief teaser to the novel that reminded me of a soap opera. The power of Rutherfurd’s storytelling, however, lies not in the grandness of its scope but rather in the personal nature of its moments. Rutherfurd’s story is sweeping and historical, a grand narrative about a city as seen through the eyes of its characters. The story shifts as well among time periods - we move from the building of the Eiffel Tower to a revolutionary group years later then to a point earlier in Paris history and back again. At 832 pages, his latest novel Paris certainly requires the character list and family tree at the beginning to help the reader keep the names straight. Edward Rutherfurd is best known for his sweeping intergenerational epics.

He didn’t want to hear anything derogatory about Grace. Rio scowled fiercely at his medic and third in command. “I don’t know how the hell she’s survived,” Diego said as he rose. Schøyen's private collection of manuscripts, which span all cultures and all time periods, is one of the largest and most comprehensive of its kind. This copy is from the significant Ian Fleming collection of Martin Schøyen (b.1940), with his bookplate. It's astonishing how little Coward bothered to make up" (Parker, page 91). we have a remarkably unflinching portrait of Ian Fleming's time on the island in 1949-51, the years immediately preceding his marriage to Ann and the simultaneous launch of James Bond. Set on the fictional island of Samolo - a close match for Jamaica - it concerns the secret relationship between the aristocratic Eloise and her lover, Bunny, whose character mirrors Fleming's almost exactly. The inscription refers to Noël Coward's first and only novel, Pomp and Circumstance (1960), at the centre of which is a thinly-veiled account of Fleming's affair with Ann. Inscribed by the author "To Noël, In exchange for the copy of P & C he didn't send me! With love Ian" on the front free endpaper. Minor stain to a small portion of the front panel, short closed tear to the foot of the rear panel, extremities very slightly rubbed else a near-fine and bright jacket. With first issue dust jacket (priced at 15s.) Head and foot of spine very slightly bumped a fine copy. Original dark grey boards, spine lettered in gilt, skeletal hand motif blocked on the front cover in blind (Gilbert's A binding). First edition, first impression, presentation copy. Still worth listening to but if an alternative version was available, I'd suggest going for that one. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? This is a classic tale, it should have been a cake walk. Lewis later noted that his inspiration for the novel. You had to constantly monitor and adjust the volume because otherwise you were going to either miss parts the story or blow your speakers (which, when combined with one of the irritating voices mentioned above, was like an ice pick in the head). Published in 1951, the novel presents complex moral conundrums through the genre of childrens fantasy. The sound engineer let the volume vary so much between the dialogue (LOUD!) and narration (quiet) that you could not just passively listen to the story while, say, on a long road trip. Fortunately, that was mostly just at the beginning. First, the narrator's choice of voices for one of the characters was so irritating that it made us (me, wife, 2 kids) want to stop listening. The narrator (and sound engineer) really messed up this audio book in two ways. How did the narrator detract from the book? Chapters 7-8: A Day with the Beavers & What Happened After Dinner. What did you love best about The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe?įantastic story, as good as when I first read it as a kid. Chapter 5: Back on This Side of the Door. His thoughts towards Amelia, a crippled friend he reluctantly makes, illuminated the differences in how boys and girls think and were smile invoking.Īnyone looking for a book to take them back to their youth, or have children this age, will enjoy reading this book. I also liked how aware Mars was of his parents and the thoughts he had about their relationship, and turmoil they were putting him through. These instances make the realistic actions and conversations the eleven year olds in this story have realistic. There were several times when a character would use a word some adults might think to advance for an eleven year that another character would question its meaning, which made this reviewer smile. The writing isn’t dumbed down for younger readers which made it enjoyable reading and would expand a younger reader’s vocabulary. Bartlett does an excellent job of putting us into the head of eleven year old Mars and the difficulties he faces moving to a new town. Although this book is categorized as a middle grade novel, this middle-aged adult loved it. ( I can’t say I’m entirely sure what Titian is doing in there, except to paint Fiammetta and add historical window-dressing.) I read this trilogy out of order - Sacred Hearts is the last in the series - but even so it’s impressive and enjoyable, dramatic and stimulating. Dunant makes much of what is remarkable about Venice, both its topography and the immensely sophisticated polyglot population. In fact the 1527 Sack of Rome provides the launching pad for the plot, as Bucino and Fiammetta, ruined and wounded in the invasion, retreat to Fiammetta’s home town of Venice, where they must claw their way back into business in a different kind of city. I don’t want to ruin the plot by saying one more thing about it.Īs in The Birth of Venus and Sacred Hearts, In the Company of the Courtesan is set in sixteenth-century Italy. And once she does, you absolutely must go back over the tale in your head, and you start to consider characters and incidents and even themes - glass and water, in this case - which take on a completely new meaning. It was pleasant to read, but seemed to be drifting somewhat, until suddenly Dunant turned the whole thing upside down. But I have to admit that I was wondering a little bit where Dunant was going with the story. Dunant, as I’ve said here before, is a terrific writer so Bucino’s narrative voice is completely absorbing.
